Joe Furlonger was born in Cairns, and grew up in Samford, Brisbane, where he now lives and works. He is regarded as one of Australia’s most respected landscape painters, known for his use of hand-made acrylic paints and reused canvases. His works are very physical, with large swathes of paint, usually a mix of figuration and abstraction. Furlonger first came to attention in the 1980s as an expressionistic painter of figures in landscape, often of bathers and surfers against the backdrop of the sea. He has exhibited all over Australia, including at the Heiser Gallery in Brisbane, most recently in 2017. He has been an Archibald Prize finalist nine times, won the Moet & Chandon Fellowship in 1988, and the Fleurieu Art Prize for Landscape in 2002. His work is held in the collections of all major State and National Galleries. Furlonger is represented by Defiance Gallery.
